QUESTIONS
Who is eligible?
To be eligible, you must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a minimum of 12 credit hours earned from an accredited institution. Please note that credit hours earned by examination or Advanced Placement (AP) do not count towards this minimum. If you believe you have a unique circumstance and would like to discuss your options, please email the PHA Advisor, whose information you can find on sfl.osu.edu.
Can I join after Freshman year?
Yes, it is common for upper-level and transfer students alike to participate in recruitment! Transfer students who participate in recruitment during their first semester at Ohio State use their grades from their previous institution for eligibility determination. Cumulative GPA will be based on information available in the Student Information System (SIS) through the Registrar.
What if my parents weren't in Greek Life?
No organization on campus requires you to be related to another member of a Greek letter organization to join. A student with family members in Sorority & Fraternity Life organizations is often called a “legacy.” Due to the exclusionary nature of these legacy policies, many organizations have begun to significantly reduce the preferential impact or eliminate their legacy policies so that all potential new members have an equitable chance to join. The following organizations on campus have eliminated preferential treatment for legacies: Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Phi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Zeta Tau Alpha.
Do I have to live in the house?
It really depends on what chapter you join! Not every chapter has a facility, and those with facilities vary with their live-in requirements. Some organizations require their members to live in the chapter house, but not all do. Most chapter facilities also count towards the Ohio State second-year live-on-campus requirement. Chapter facilities are often significantly less expensive than university housing, but costs vary by organization depending on the services offered. Most facilities offer meal plans, laundry, and other amenities.
Can I join if I do not drink?
Drinking is neither required nor promoted in our community. Although most organizations host social events involving alcohol, these are not the central focus of any organization. Students that consume alcohol under the age of 21 jeopardize their chapter membership and open themselves to disciplinary action under Ohio State’s Student Code of Conduct, and State, and Federal laws.
